A Halloween Friday Flash 55

"Ah, you're scared. Baby—"

"I'm not!" Charlie said, shaking all the way to crazy old kid-eating Mrs. Flanagan's door.

They stared.

"He did it."

"No way."

"He's been in there a long time..."

"I'm outta here!"

They ran.

Mrs. Flanagan, meanwhile, had Charlie all right.

"Another slice of cake, dear? Do you like cocoa?"

To join in the fun, write any story you like in 55-words (no more no less) then tell Mr. Knowitall, a.k.a. G-Man by leaving a comment on his own Flash-55 post today, where you'll find plenty more 55-word stories linked in the comments.

In the spirit of the season, some flash horror markets follow. I could deepen the horror by including non-paying ones, but you know I'm not that cruel...

Strangetastic publishes supernatural fiction ranging from dark fantasy to light horror, with a special interests in the ghosts and monsters of regional folklore. Pays $10-25 for accepted stories.

Nossa Morte pays $20-40 for short fiction depicting the 'dark side of human nature'.

House of Horror will consider all forms of horror, 'the bloodier the better'. Pays $5 for short stories and artwork; $3 for poems.

Happy Halloween Everyone!!

My thanks to Dover Publications for the free clipart samples used in the story.

Love the costume on that kid!

As always, you do the best 55s. [And unlike Thom, I'm pretending to be there with you, so it's closer to Friday time].

Happy Halloween to your munchkins! And please, if you have to be the Grand Evaluator of Chocolate, let the kids have some of it.

Thanks Hope! Thom's in Nevada this weekend so hopefully they'll be less timezone grumping. I managed to hit his iPhone as he landed in Vegas, but I'm guessing he'll be in family mode instead of commenting mode this weekend... we'll see!

DEFINITELY we're all in CHOCOLATE MODE!! LOL Can't wait! Any plans for Halloween?

Cute classic tale. But shame on those "friends" of his who abandoned him. In this day and age... well... the story would be quite different, wouldn't it?

I'm up, too!

Thanks Dr. John! I suddenly realised it was my last chance to use some of this Halloween clipart before it was too late...or just practicing for Portrait of Words later on?

Thanks Nessa!

We had a neighbor like that! When I stopped dreading her, she started paying me to rake her leaves.

I love your sense of humor.

Hey, Hon --

Just to let you know, if I REALLY drop off the map now, it's because I got accepted into my Master's program on Tues., Wed. was my first class and today we have class from 9-3. As if I didn't have enough to do...anyway, I'm always thinking of you, and you'll AT LEAST hear from me in 16 days...

Thom said...

It's a good thing I've been rather busy...or trust me...I would have noticed but what the hell. It's the altitude and I can't think of anything to say about the time zone...Yeah right. I'm slacking in this cold weather. Great 55 I loved it :) You got your free ticket this week...LOL...for the mention on 3WT LOL

Susan at Stony River said...

Thanks Baino! It was fun--weirdly, it didn't rain!!

Sandy, I like that! do you ever wonder what stories are told about us without our knowing? I heard some *doozies* about myself this past summer---I had no idea I was so interesting.
:-P

Elizabeth, congratulations!! Master's is exciting, and you've convinced me to go back too -- it's not for the money (that wouldn't balance out in fact) it's for myself and the example I set my kids, especially my *oldest* darling at this point.
But God, I'm such a dunce... I'm sitting here scratching my head wondering 'what's she doing in 16 days?' DUUUUHHHH... and THANK YOU!!

Thom, d'oh! We weren't talking about you in the comments while you were gone HONEST! lol
You're so sweet to do all this retro-commenting and posting when you've only got a few days there.
